Hi everyone,
You might have heard that as well as our regular ceilidhs, we also
run a workshop and session, every Wednesday night at the University
Arms, and wondered what that's all about.
So what's a session? It's just an informal get-together with music
and occasional singing. Anyone and everyone is welcome, whether you
want to play, sing or just have a chat and enjoy the music. All
ability levels are welcome and if you're not too confident, it's an
excellent way to learn a few more tunes and practice playing by ear.
There are always strong musicians to carry the tune, so bring an
instrument and join in! In addition, the session is where we recruit
new musicians for ceilidh bands, so if you want to get more involved
you'll definitely want to come along on a Wednesday night.
If you want to learn to play ceilidh music, but really don't know
what it's all about, or just want to learn some more tunes and tricks
in a slightly more formal setting than the main session, come along
to one of our workshops. Each week there will be a theme, which Tom
and I will announce in advance so that you'll have some idea of
what's coming. We'll typically teach a tune or two by ear, and
highlight some of the features which make each tune interesting.
We'll also have some more general workshops on subjects such as
learning by ear, and playing for dancing.
Both the session and the workshop will take place in the University
Arms on Western Bank, opposite the Robert Richards building and next
to the Information Commons. The workshops will be 8-9, and will
usually be in the upstairs room (ask at the bar if you need help
finding it). The sessions are 9pm til closing in the conservatory,
which is directly ahead as you walk into the pub. The bar serves
excellent beer and cider and delicious Yorkshire Crisps too!
We hope to see lots of people there, musicians and non-musicians
alike. This week's workshop theme will be "Polkas"
Cheers,
Jez and Tom (music officers)
